Signs of Life

Photographs by John Foster

All of my life I have “suffered” from eyes that see too much. This condition can be a hindrance, especially when I am driving. Only through photography and art have I been able to put this to work for me.

My eyes are constantly bombarded with the most subtle of things, forcing me to connect this shape to that line or this color to that texture.  It’s part of the reason I struggled in school at times—with the teacher talking about fractions and me finding beauty in the soft, cloud-like grayness of the last blackboard erasure. And to all the people who have said I don’t pay attention to them, it’s not that I don’t find you interesting. It’s most likely because I find the tree behind you just as fascinating.

Signs of Life is a yearlong photography project seeking direct or implied signs of human activity in the world around me.
